"Are You a Survivor?"

If you don't know it by now, I'm a big fan of daily devotionals. One of my favorites is our very own "Upper Room." I confess that I don't read the "Upper Room" everyday, but last Thursday's devotion really spoke to my heart. It was entitled "Survival." The Bible verse that was the main focus was John 6:35, which says, "Jesus said, 'I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty."

The emphasis of the devotional was on the importance of taking care of our spiritual bodies and the dangers of depriving ourselves of certain things such as prayer, Bible Study and attending church. To illustrate this point, the writer, Bob LaForge, spoke of the "rule of three." He said, "In the study of survival, the "rule of three" asserts that a human can survive no more than three minutes without oxygen, three hours without warmth, three days without water, and three weeks without food."

To be sure, we understand the risks involved with depriving ourselves of these necessities and therefore take the necessary precautions to avoid such risks. But do we do the same when it comes to our spiritual well-being? Like Mr. LaForge says, "We may blame our frustrations, anger, discouragement, worry and anxiety on our circumstances or bad relationships." But the truth of the matter, usually, lies with our negligence of spending time with God through those "means of grace" mentioned above. Don't take chances with your spiritual lives and ignore the need to pray, study God's Word and fellowship with the Body of Christ. Instead, be a survivor!

With Love From & For Jesus,

Pastor David
