Shallow or Fallow Ground?

One of my favorite pastimes is gardening. I love to watch God(s hand at work as seeds are planted and they go, or should I say, (grow(, from infancy to maturity. Like most activities such as gardening, there is a lot to learn from those hobbies or interests we share.

Gardening reminds me of the (Parable of the Sower( recorded in the Gospels that Jesus taught His disciples. In it Jesus talks about shallow ground versus fallow ground. In doing so, Jesus taught that a person(s heart is much like soil. He stated that there is a significant difference between seed sown in shallow soil and seed sown in fallow soil. Seed that is sown in shallow soil develops a weak root system and produces little or no crop. On the other hand, seeds sown in fallow soil, which is soil that has been properly prepared and planted, yields a crop far more abundant.

The Word of God seeks to take root in all of our hearts so that it may grow and produce thirty, sixty and a hundredfold what was sown. Dependent upon how well we allow the Holy Spirit to cultivate our hearts determines whether the Word of God will find shallow or fallow soil to take root and grow. The Lord needs to plow the (soil of our hearts( to make it fallow so that we can experience healthy growth and be able to produce a bountiful crop. Therefore yield your heart to this painful but profitable process. Otherwise the deceitfulness of wealth and the desire for things will come and choke the (Seed( sown by the Word and make it unfruitful. To be sure such a decision won(t be a shallow one! (Read Mark 4:1-25)
