Who Needs the Church?

Most would agree that it's the day by day, "nitty gritty" type things that cause us to lose our perspective. I mean, honestly, doesn't the majority of us allow ourselves to get unnerved more by those small insignificant matters than we do the heavier questions of life that we have to deal with? Hello! Is anybody listening out there? Maybe the following story will help you to relate to where I'm going with this.

There was a construction worker who moved from Pennsylvania to San Diego. He found it hard to locate a steady job. Therefore, as time passed by, supporting his family became more and more a concern. One day, out of his frustration with the way things were, he complained to a co-worker about the number of shoes his three children ran through, forcing him to buy new ones. After a moment, the other man said, "John, my little boy is paralyzed from the waist down. I'd give anything if he could wear out a pair a shoes."

Later that day, when John got home, he went into his children's room and picked up his kid's worn out shoes: Joe's with the tips gone from using them to brake his wagon, Clair's worn out from skipping rope, and little Jimmy's still wet from jumping into mud puddles. Before he went to sleep that night, John knelt down and thanked God for his children's worn out shoes. His external circumstances hadn't varied much. He was still short of money, but his perspective on things had changed tremendously.

Many times I have come to the "Church" not being in a very worshipful mood, feeling like the whole world is against me. Most of those times have been associated with losing my focus because one or more of those "nitty gritty" type things eating at me. But be that as it may, thanks be to God, more times than not, the "Church" has helped me to go back to the hustle and bustle of everyday life with a whole new perspective.

Without a doubt the "Church" seeks to serve us in a variety of ways. But one of the most important ways that it seeks to serve our needs is by helping us keep our focus on that which is of vital importance, particularly our relationship with the Lord. Yes, the "Church" is there to help us all to deal with the small insignificant matters as much as the heavier questions of life. Therefore my dear brothers and sisters, you need the "Church" and the "Church" needs you for this very reason: to stay focused on the Author and Finisher of our faith, and to help others to do the same! Because you are the "Church!"

With Love From Jesus,

Pastor David
