Show Up

I remember when Hannah was entering Columbia College I went to a parents orientation. They told us that if our daughters were to be successful they would have to show up, sit up, listen up and speak up. The way I interpreted this message, Hannah would have to be present in class, be awake, listen well and engage. It seemed pretty simple to me and as her four years progressed, hallelujah, it became simple to her. You cannot earn a degree without showing up, sitting up, listening up and speaking up.

I feel the same principle applies to our church life and our church education, if you will. We have to show up. We have to be awake. We have to hear the message and then we can put into practice what God would have us do.

This week, as we focus on the Christian Stewardship of Presence, we need to examine just how well we are doing in earning our "Christian Degree." How well do we show up for "class?" We all know what happens when we "cut" too many college classes; so why in the world would we "cut" the most important class of the week? The class where we celebrate all the good things God has done in our lives. . . where we sing praises to His wonderful Glory. . where we pray to Him for all of our needs . . . where we hear His enlightening Word.

My Brothers and Sisters, I challenge you to "Show Up" this Sunday as we hear more about our commitment to God as it pertains to our stewardship of being present.
